Bafana captain Ronwen Williams wins big at CAF Awards
Bafana Bafana and Mamelodi Sundowns goalkeeper Ronwen Williams made South African football history at the CAF Awards on Monday evening.
Having a remarkable showing at the ceremony, Williams claimed multiple accolades, including Interclub Player of the Year and Goalkeeper of the Year.
In doing so, he became the first South African footballer to win the Goalkeeper of the Year award. He is also the second PSL player to win the Interclub Player of the Year award after his Sundowns teammate Denis Onyango.
Williams’ excellence at the ceremony will surely make up for him missing out on the prestigious Yachine Trophy at the Ballon d’Or awards.
“President and esteemed guest, this is a wonderful moment for me. Thank you to CAF for the recognition, and we are grateful to you guys,” Williams said.
“I want to take this opportunity to thank my support staff, my family, my parents, my siblings, brother and sister, my partner, as well as my kids, for being real with me throughout my career.”
Looking back at his illustrious career, he showed gratitude to the coaches who were part of the journey, “It wasn’t easy, but you guys pushed me to be the player that I am today,” he added.
The Bafana Bafana skipper also highlighted the importance of inspiring others, saying:
“I know this win will inspire millions and millions of South Africans to believe in themselves, to push boundaries, and never forget your dreams are valid.”
