Unathi Simayile relishes first Banyana call-up

University of the Western Cape (UWC) defender Unathi Simayile recently earned her first call-up to Banyana Banyana and shared her experience on the achievement.

The 23-year-old from Cape Town has shown her capabilities in both club and international football, with coach Desiree Ellis giving her an opportunity to showcase her talent as she recently gave younger players a chance to play in national colours.

“Playing for the national team is a significant step from club football,” said Simayile to Basadi In Action.

“The intensity and level of competition are much higher, with the best players from around the country competing against each other. Every game is a battle, and you need to be at the top of your game to succeed.”

Simayile also described what it means to her to wear the national team jersey.

“Representing my country is an incredible honour, and it’s a milestone that I’m very proud of,” she said.

“This experience will undoubtedly impact my game moving forward. I’ve learned so much from playing with and against the best players in the country, and I’m excited to bring that experience back to my club team.”

The young star is also enjoying playing competitive football for UWC, a team that has become formidable in the Hollywoodbets Super League.

“Playing for UWC has been an incredible experience,” Simayile added.

“The team has a rich history of success and the pressure to perform is always high. However, this pressure has helped shape me into a better player. I’ve learned how to handle expectations and to perform under pressure.”
