Bafana Star Watch – Williams upbeat after Dortmund defeat
While Mamelodi Sundowns gave a good account of themselves during their 4-3 defeat against Borussia Dortmund in the FIFA Club World Cup this past weekend, Bafana goalkeeper Ronwen Williams revealed that the Brazilians can compete with the best in the world.
Williams, who grabbed the headlines for all the wrong reasons this weekend, remain positive ahead of their final Group F assignment against Fluminense on Wednesday, 25 June.
The Downs keeper made a rookie error with a back pass directly to the feet of Felix Nmecha, who scored the equalizing goal following Lucas Ribeiro’s stunning opener in the 11th minute.
Reflecting on the tie, Williams expressed that Sundowns can compete at the highest order with the right mindset.
“However, we showed that we can compete. Yes, obviously, they are physically bigger, but it’s all about the mind; if your mentality is right, you can go out there and compete with the best, and that’s what we showed,” Williams said.
“We had a very good chance in the first-half, and I’m just proud of the boys for their efforts and the desire to keep fighting. Now, the gap is not that big. I think we have proved that.”
