Motau hoping to open doors for other girls in SA
Amogelang Motau is hoping her switch to Tijuana Femenil will inspire other female footballers in South Africa to follow in her footsteps and move abroad.
The Banyana Banyana international opted for a new challenge when she left UWC Ladies in January to sign for the Liga MX Femenil club, joining compatriots Hilda Magaia, Thembi Kgatlana and Sinoxolo Cesane in Mexico.
Motau, who is the reigning SAFA Women’s League Player of the Season, admits she was surprised to land a professional contract at this stage of her career, but is determined to make the most of the “miracle” opportunity.
The 28-year-old midfielder has set her sights on becoming a first-team regular at the Estadio Caliente and is aiming to help Las Xoloitzcuintles qualify for the playoffs, although there is still plenty of work to do as they sit 11th in the standings after 15 games.
“It’s one of the most difficult transitions I’ve ever had to make in my life, I didn’t think I would get a pro contract at the age of 28, but it happened and I am living in a miracle,” Motau told SABC Sport.
“I’m so grateful that it happened, and it’s difficult but doable, and I hope I can do well as I realise the responsibility I have on my shoulders to make sure that other girls behind me, who are from South Africa, can get opportunities as well.”
She added: “I would love to make it to the Championship [playoffs], make it to the top eight – that’s our goal for this season, and hopefully we win the league.
“But for now, for me, it’s just to find my feet at the club and contribute positively – be a starter, those are the things I’m looking at.”
