Mbokazi’s U-20 AFCON participation in doubt
The South African U-20 national team could have to do without star player Mbekezeli Mbokazi at the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations, despite the Orlando Pirates defender being named in the final squad.
Mbokazi is included in the squad by coach Raymond Mdaka for the youth football tournament which is going to be taking place in Egypt from 27 April to 18 May.
South Africa was drawn in Group A, alongside the hosts Egypt, Zambia, Sierra Leone and Tanzania.
The top four participating teams will ensure qualification for the 2025 FIFA U-20 World Cup to be hosted in Chile.
According to FARPost, Mbokazi will no longer be available to travel with the Amajita side due to Pirates’ crucial fixtures taking place during the tournament.
Since his debut in March, 19-year-old Mbokazi has quickly become a vital player for the Buccaneers, earning two Man of the Match awards and contributing to the team’s unbeaten streak.
During the U-20 AFCON tournament in Egypt, Orlando Pirates face a demanding schedule, including a league and Nedbank Cup final double-header against Kaizer Chiefs, as well as their CAF Confederation Cup semi-final.
