Did you know? – Bafana look up in FIFA rankings
As it stands, South Africa are currently one of the most in-form teams on the African continent and are set to move up the official FIFA rankings in the next couple of months.
After completing their latest 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers on a positive note, coach Hugo Broos and his charges occupy top spot in Group C after six matches played.
Bafana Bafana have progressively gotten better under Broos in the last couple of years and are currently ranked 57th in the world and 10th on the African continent.
Now expected to make even more ground on the international standings, did you know that the last time South Africa were in the world top 50 was in 2011?
As the host nation of the 2010 FIFA World Cup, South Africa finished 3rd in their Group, level on points with 2nd placed Mexico, who eventually progressed to the knockout stage as a result of a superior, albeit slender goal difference advantage.
In the year after the World Cup, South Africa found themselves as high as 47th in the world ranking while the squad was under the tutelage of Pitso Mosimane at the time.
Also, Bafana were ranked 7th on the African continent that year.
