COSAFA Banyana seal dramatic victory to face Zambia in finals

Banyana Banyana fought the good fight and progressed to the final of the COSAFA Women’s Championship by defeating Mozambique on penalties at the Isaac Wolfson Stadium on Thursday afternoon. After 20 minutes of play, the scoreline was goalless as both teams were trying to find a breakthrough, both defences stood their ground. Just two minutes later, Jessica Williams made a brilliant save to deny Mozambique the lead. In the 33rd minute, Mozambique scored the opening goal of the fixture through Miguel but at the stroke of half-time, Tshegofatso Motlogelwa converted from the penalty spot to level matters for South Africa. The Southern African teams went into the break all-square. As the second period went underway, it became a closely contested affair as the scoreline remained the same even after 67 minutes played. As normal time drew to a close, Maud Khumalo made a subsitution by bringing Ayesha Moosa on for Sinamile Mkhwanazi. Three minutes of added time was granted, but matters remained the same until the final whistle in the semi-final. The match went straight into a penalty shootout to determine the finalist. Isabella Ludwig had the responsibility of taking the first spot kick, which she confidently put into the back of the net. Mozambique were up and subsequently missed their first kick in the shootout. It was a highly contested shootout with the visitors looking more dangerous as it progressed, however Williams’ save gave the team even more of an advantage. Kesha Hendricks scored the winning penalty of the match making it 4-1 in the penalty contest, ensuring that COSAFA Banyana will be taking part in the final of the competition against Zambia in Gqeberha.
