CHAN Qualifiers Preview – Bafana eye CHAN spot with Malawi win

CHAN Qualifiers Preview – Bafana eye CHAN spot with Malawi win

South Africa will go head-to-head with Malawi in the 2024 African Nations Championships (CHAN) final round qualifier second-leg match on Sunday.

Kick-off is at 15h00.

The game is scheduled to take place at the 2010 FIFA World Cup venue, Loftus Versfeld Stadium in Pretoria, with Bafana Bafana trailing 1-0 on aggregate.

A late goal by Zelieti Nkhoma earned Malawi a 1-0 win over Bafana in the first-leg clash in Lilongwe on May 3 and it was the Flames’ first home win against South Africa in 24 years.

It was also South Africa’s first defeat in the 2024 CHAN qualifiers, as they secured a win and a draw against Egypt in the previous round of their qualifying campaign.

Following the defeat to Malawi, coach Molefi Ntseki has reinforced his squad by adding Neo Maema, Ndumulelo Maphangule, Victor Letsoalo, Siyanda Msani, Simon Ramabu and Kamogelo Sebelebele.

Meanwhile, Malawi will be without the services of Zebron Kalima as the Silver Strikers midfielder has been ruled out of Sunday’s match due to a quadriceps muscle injury.

The winner of the tie between South Africa and Malawi will qualify for the CHAN finals to be held in Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda in August 2025.

In Head-to-Head stats, South Africa and Malawi have met 16 times across all competitions since their maiden meeting in June 1996.

Bafana have dominated this Southern African rivalry, winning 11 matches compared to the Flames’ four victories, while one game ended in a draw.
