Bafana Bafana profile: Themba Zwane
Date of Birth: 3 August 1989
Place of Birth: Tembisa, Gauteng
Position: Attacking midfield
Height: 1,70m
Themba Zwane is an attacking midfielder who currently plays professional football for Mamelodi Sundowns and the South African national football team.
A versatile player who can also be utilised as a forward, Zwane built a new reputation from himself in the Bafana Bafana squad when he finally received a call-up from Hugo Broos after falling out of favour.
Coming back into the side, Zwane made an immediate good impression, earning himself a spot in the starting line-up amongst players who are much younger than him.
With a vast amount of experience, the attacking midfielder nicknamed “Mshishi” was also instrumental with South Africa’s third placed finish in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
The player was sent on loan earlier in his career to Mpumalanga Black Aces from Sundowns, and became a fan favourite quickly for his skill on the ball and scoring ability.
Breaking the lines of any defence in his way, Zwane poses a unique attacking threat in the Bafana Bafana squad because of his almost “sneaky” ability to find space and penetrate the backline of the opponent.
