Tau move to Qatar good news for Broos
Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos will have welcomed the news that Percy Tau has signed for Qatar SC to bring an end to his troubled stay at Al Ahly.
The 30-year-old winger won 12 trophies during a three-and-a-half year spell at the Cairo International Stadium, although he wasn’t always a regular starter due to various injuries and a falling-out with Red Eagles head coach Marcel Koller.
Tau’s situation in the Egyptian capital impacted his international career after he played no part in South Africa’s successful 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign.
The last of his 50 caps came in the 1-1 draw with Nigeria in a 2026 World Cup qualifier on 7 June 2024 and Broos urged the player to quit Al Ahly in November ahead of the 2-0 win over Uganda which secured their place at the AFCON finals in Morocco later this year.
Broos said at the time: “You know Percy Tau [doesn’t] play anymore. For the moment, he is always on the bench. So, I said already two months ago the environment for him in Al Ahly is not positive.
“I hope, really hope, that he can change clubs, that he can be in a more positive environment, that he can make the performances again that we can expect from him. And then he will be again a very important player for Bafana Bafana.”
Tau has joined the King on an initial six-month contract with an option to extend his stay in Qatar for a further 12 months if the club avoids relegation.
There will be much less pressure on the former Mamelodi Sundowns star to perform in the Qatar Stars League and this could count in his favour as he looks to revive his career and force his way back into Broos’ plans for 2025 and beyond.
