Mdaka gives update on AFCON squad
South Africa Under-20 coach Raymond Mdaka has a better indication of how his team will look at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations on the eve of their departure to Egypt.
Mdaka named his 21-man squad for the tournament on April 10, but already has to make a tweak as Mbekezeli Mbokazi will not be available due to his commitments to Orlando Pirates.
Amajita are also without the injured Siyabonga Mabena, while Shandre Campbell was not called up after Club Brugge refused to release him for international duty during a crucial stage of their season.
Mdaka revealed that Asekho Tiwani will join them in Egypt after Mamelodi Sundowns’ CAF Champions League semi-final clash with Al Ahly on Friday and Neo Rapoo has been granted permission to play for SuperSport United in a crucial match against Polokwane City on Saturday before jetting off to North Africa.
“Siyabonga Mabena is injured, and he was one of the key players. Mbekezeli Mbokazi is one of the key players and we started every program with him – we thought we’d have him but unfortunately, we won’t have him,” Mdaka said.
“Regarding Asekho Tiwani, the captain, we discussed with Mamelodi Sundowns and made arrangements. Tiwani will be left in Egypt (Masandawana play against Al Ahly in Cairo in the semi-finals of the CAF Champions League).
“We have Neo Rapoo also, we’re in constant discussions with the teams just to see how best we can help each other. SuperSport are playing a crucial match, you see their position, so we allowed him to play and then join us in Egypt.”
Amajita are set to depart for the African showpiece on Wednesday and will play their first game against the host nation on Sunday.
